11 Best Chrome Extensions for Productivity You Need in 2024

Ivana Jakovljevic

Last updated on: February 21, 2024

Aside from being fast and easy to use, Google Chrome is a leading web browser whose popularity doesn’t seem to be waning. In fact, if you’re reading this — chances are big you’re using Chrome yourself.

What’s more, what some people may not know is that you can utilize Chrome’s web store to make your day more productive, simply by installing an extension (or even more extensions at once).

That’s why I’ve taken it upon myself to find and test out some of the best Chrome extensions that can increase your productivity levels, whether you’re a student, a full-time employee, or a freelancer.

To help you choose the Chrome extension that satisfies your needs, in this blog post, I’ll share my experience and impressions while testing out the extensions and:

  • List 11 best Chrome extensions for productivity that you can add to your Chrome browser,
  • Explain what each extension offers in terms of features, and
  • Provide you with other important details about these extensions, such as their prices, pros and cons, and more.

So, let’s begin!

Best Chrome extensions for productivity - cover

Clockify — best for time tracking

Clockify example

Clockify is a time tracker and timesheet app that lets you track work hours across projects easier than ever.

Why is Clockify best for time tracking?

What my team and I like about Clockify is that it allows us to choose how we want to track our time.

With Clockify’s Chrome time tracking extension, you can track the time you spend on work tasks with a single click. Just start the timer at the extensions bar and begin your workday.

Alternatively, if you want to record your time manually, you can fill in timesheets or make use of ready-made, printable timesheet templates in Clockify

In addition, what I also like about Clockify is how it helps me improve my time management skills. Clockify allows me to measure time spent on my daily activities and analyze where my time goes. That way, I can see whether I’m spending my time efficiently, or I can identify any time-wasters, such as procrastination, for example.

Finally, you can also track time from any text in the browser, which is a great option that only the Clockify extension provides. Namely, when you select any text (e.g., title of a document in Google Docs) and right-click on it, you’ll be able to choose the “Start timer with description” option from the dropdown menu.

As soon as you click on this option, Clockify automatically creates a time entry with the selected text as description and starts tracking time for it.

Clockify
Clockify’s “Start timer with description” option

Clockify’s pros

  • It offers the Pomodoro timer to set work intervals and add breaks in between, which can help you be more productive, and
  • It integrates with many other productivity tools such as Google Calendar, Notion, Zapier, Jira, Trello, etc.

Clockify’s cons

  • For extra time tracking features like the option to import timesheets from a file directly to Clockify, you’ll need to upgrade to one of the paid plans, and
  • It doesn’t offer the possibility of splitting a time entry into two with a single action.

💡 Clockify Pro Tip

What’s new in Clockify?

In October 2023, Clockify introduced a UI improvement — the infinite scrolling option. Before, users had to click on the “Load more” button to load projects/tags while using Clockify’s Chrome extension. Now, with the infinite scrolling, projects/tags load as the user scrolls.

Also, as of January 2024, notifications in Clockify (e.g., Pomodoro timer and idle detection notifications) are integrated within the extension itself, so you can see all your notifications by clicking on the bell in the upper right corner of your Chrome extension.

Grammarly — best for grammar checking and high-quality writing

Grammarly example

Grammarly is a tool that helps you write confidently. You can use Grammarly to proofread or edit your documents but also to write with more clarity.

Why is Grammarly best for grammar checking and high-quality writing?

Grammarly is one of the best Chrome extensions for work — whether you’re a teacher, reporter, or office worker. It possesses the ultimate grammar knowledge, combined with:

  • Spell-checking capabilities,
  • Advanced suggestions,
  • Clarity corrections, and
  • Style adjustments.

With the Grammarly extension, I can easily check my grammar, spelling, and punctuation in real-time. It follows me on most websites that have text fields, and it starts running as soon as I start typing.

Grammarly also allows me to write high-quality text and save time on editing and polishing. With it, I can be worry-free when I have to submit an important report, for instance.

Moreover, to make your writing shine, you can use Grammarly’s generative AI feature — the Prompt feature. For example, to rewrite my email by using this feature and make it sound even better, I follow these steps:

  • Select the whole text,
  • Choose the Prompt option “Improve it,” and
  • Click on “Insert.”
Grammarly prompts
Grammarly’s Prompt generative text feature

I also have the option to make my email sound more professional or assertive, simplify it, and more.

Grammarly’s pros

  • It offers the Plagiarism detection to cross-reference your text to thousands of other web pages to find identical sentences or phrases, and
  • It provides the word-choice option to find perfect words to express what you want to say in the right way.

Grammarly’s cons

  • Its free plan includes only 100 prompts, and
  • Its paid plans may be too expensive for some users.

What’s new in Grammarly?

In the fall of 2023, Grammarly released several new updates and features — some for the free plan and others for the paid plans.

For the free plan, Grammarly added the ability to see your prompt history. Now you can access your recent prompts and easily pick up where you left off.

When it comes to paid plans, Grammarly released a new feature for the Business plan called the Writing Progress Dashboard. With it, you can now enhance your writing skills by getting personalized insights about your writing performance.

Do you have an important exam coming up and feel like there’s no way you can 100% prepare for it? Chrome extensions are really helpful with research, editing, and writing, so if you want to be a step closer to passing that exam, check the list of extensions we’ve selected:

Todoist — best for task management

Todoist

Todoist is one of the best Chrome extensions for organization with more than 30 million trusted users. It helps you organize your work by managing all your important tasks and projects.

Why is Todoist best for task management?

The Todoist Chrome extension allows you to keep track of your projects and manage all your tasks by organizing and delegating them directly from your browser.

I like using Todoist because it helps me fully utilize every second of my time. I can color-code my projects, create sub-groups and sub-projects, and really micromanage my daily workload.

By creating tasks and sub-tasks within my projects, I can break large tasks into smaller ones and have a better overview of each step that I need to complete.

Todoist tasks and sub-tasks
In Todoist, you can easily add and sort your tasks and sub-tasks

Furthermore, you can use Todoist’s extension to collaborate with your team — create projects and share them with your co-workers in an easy and straightforward way.

Also, if you want to prioritize your tasks, Todoist has the Priority option where you can choose different priority levels starting from the most important task (marked as a red flag) to the least important task (marked as a white flag).

Todoist priority example
The Priority option in Todoist

With Todoist, you can better plan your day by having your tasks neatly organized and sorted, which makes you more productive as a result.

Todoist’s pros

  • It allows me to have all my tasks in one place, and
  • It is a reliable app that offers many solutions for efficient task management — whether you want to manage your personal or work tasks.

Todoist’s cons

  • Some additional features such as the Calendar layout for projects and a shared team workspace are only available in paid plans, and
  • Since the app has many features and options, it may take some time before you figure out how to use each task management option.

What’s new in Todoist?

On December 13th, 2023, Todoist introduced new changes for their Today view option. Now, when you open your Today view, you can quickly check your daily workload by seeing the total task count and the total amount of time you’ve scheduled for them.

Also, on December 25th, 2023, Todoist announced a new update that includes the ability to choose the Calendar layout option for projects.

Momentum Dash — best for staying focused and motivated

Momentum Dash example

If you need a little bit of inspiration to really get you going, Momentum Dash is a perfect solution for you. Not only does Momentum Dash help you get motivated but also reminds you of your goals for the day.

Why is Momentum Dash best for staying focused and motivated?

Momentum Dash helps you enhance your productivity by turning your new tab page into an inspiring dashboard.

To be more detailed, Momentum Dash allows you to customize your new tab and transform it into a personalized dashboard where you can add everything you deem important, such as:

  • Inspirational quotes,
  • Beautiful backgrounds,
  • Reminders,
  • Favorite website shortcuts, or
  • To-do lists.

What’s more, Momentum Dash helps you maintain your focus and achieve your goals more consistently. It gets you back on the task with friendly reminders and keeps you motivated with new inspiring mantras each day.

I use Momentum Dash’s Chrome productivity extension to keep my new tab page clean, with only essentials to help me do my best work.

For example, as I often use Yahoo to check my mail, I added a Yahoo website shortcut to my dashboard with the help of the Momentum Dash’s Links feature.

Momentum Dash links feature
Momentum Dash’s Links feature

What I particularly like about Momentum Dash is how it uses mantras to motivate me to keep working even if it’s not one of my best days or when I have difficulty concentrating on the task. It may not seem very likely, but something as simple as a mantra can significantly boost your confidence and make your day more productive.

Momentum Dash’s pros

  • It offers the Bookmarks Bar feature to import your existing Chrome bookmarks into Momentum Dash and use them within the extension, and
  • It is very easy to use.

Momentum Dash’s cons

  • Some additional features, such as the Pomodoro feature or the option of adding custom mantras and quotes, are only available in Momentum Plus (which is a paid plan), and
  • It doesn’t provide a lot of integrations.

What’s new in Momentum Dash?

On September 11th, 2023, Momentum Dash announced the integration of AI-powered features into Momentum Dash.

For example, you can now use the Ask AI option to ask for popular quotes related to a particular topic you’re working on, study tips, and more.

💡 Clockify Pro Tip

If you’re spending long hours in front of the computer and have difficulty staying focused during that time, we have some useful tips for you:

Noisli — best for work/study relaxation

Noisli example

Noisli helps you mask annoying noises and focus better at work. Choose one of its relaxing sounds, and stay calm and productive throughout the day.

Why is Noisli best for work/study relaxation?

Noisli is one of those must-have Chrome extensions for productivity as it is specifically designed to help you both stay focused and relaxed while working.

To focus better on the task at hand, I simply choose the sound combo I find most inspiring. This can be the sound of:

  • A falling rain,
  • Coffee shop chatter,
  • Wood noises,
  • Fire crackling,
  • Wind,
  • Crickets, and more.

Moreover, Noisli is especially useful if you’re working in an open office where the background noises are likely to divert your attention away from the task at hand. Just switch on the extension, choose a sound combination you want, and put your headphones on.

💡 Clockify Pro Tip

Are you working in an open office? Do you have difficulty staying productive when so much is going on around you? Here are some useful tips that can help you:

Even if you don’t work in a noisy office, Noisli can still be helpful. I work remotely and don’t really get distracted by my surroundings that often, so I still use Noisli while working. I just click on the Productivity playlist, and the tender sound of rain relaxes me — but at the same time keeps me focused and makes my work more enjoyable.

Finally, with Noisli, I can divide my working time into blocks, and this functionality helps me prevent burnout and finish my tasks timely.

With Noisli’s Work in sessions feature, I can easily divide my working time into smaller time blocks (sessions) and also add breaks in between.

In Noisli, you can divide your working time into blocks of time (and add short and long breaks)

💡 Clockify Pro Tip

To learn more on the subject of time blocking, make sure you read our blog post:

Noisli’s pros

  • It has the advanced timer to schedule the duration of each background sound and set how gently you want the sound to stop at the end of each session, and
  • It’s easy to use.

Noisli’s cons

  • Noisli’s free plan offers only 16 sounds, so if you want access to the rest of the sounds (28 in total), you’ll have to upgrade to one of the paid plans, and
  • It rarely introduces new features and updates.

What’s new in Noisli?

Noisli’s most recent updates took place on February 10th, 2020, when its latest version 3.0 was released.

With its latest version, Noisli introduced 12 new sounds, the Favorites option, the Oscillation feature, and more.

Save to Pocket — best for keeping important content close by

Save to Pocket example

Save to Pocket simplifies your life by enabling you to save everything — from articles to images and videos that you find interesting or important — in a single place, and access it whenever you want.

Why is Save to Pocket best for keeping important content close by?

Save to Pocket allows you to easily save articles, videos, and other important items and read or watch them later on. With it, you can:

  • Mark items as “viewed” or “not viewed,”
  • Add tags to sort and find items in your Pocket,
  • Save links, memes, or even recipes with a single click, and more.

I find Chrome’s Save to Pocket extension extremely useful as it lets me save important items and focus on them at a more convenient time.

For example, if I’m in a hurry or dealing with an important task, but I don’t want to lose that interesting article I came across, I just need to click the Pocket button in my browser and save it in an instant.

Another great Save to Pocket’s option is the Discover option. With it, I can find the most interesting stories on the web in the extension itself and save them for later. You can even filter stories by topic, such as Business, Education, Science, Travel, and more.

Save to Pocket discover feature
Save to Pocket’s Discover feature

Save to Pocket’s pros

  • It allows you to highlight a certain passage of the text and make it more prominent, and
  • It provides a permanent library to save a copy of an article so you can open that version even if the article changes in the meantime or is taken offline.

Save to Pocket’s cons

  • If you want to use custom fonts and unlimited highlights for a better reading experience, you’ll need to upgrade to Pocket Premium, and
  • Since Save to Pocket is a Mozilla product, to be able to use the Save to Pocket Chrome extension, you’ll need to create a Mozilla account.

What’s new in Save to Pocket?

Save to Pocket released its latest product feature — the Lists feature — on May 16th, 2023. With it, users can now create and manage multiple lists where they can save articles, videos, websites, or even remove specific items from the list.

Furthermore, Save to Pocket also announced that some additional options are coming soon, such as the option to add multiple items to a list at once.

Win the Day — best for goal setting

Win the Day example

Win the Day is an easy-to-use Chrome productivity extension that helps you track your habits and meet specific goals.

Why is Win the Day best for goal setting?

If you need a productivity plugin to help you achieve both your smaller and bigger goals — Win the Day will surely be of help.

With the Win the Day’s Chrome extension, you can:

  • Create a goal,
  • Set the time period for that goal (it can be from 1 week to 53 weeks),
  • Add your daily targets, and
  • Monitor your time as it passes and see your progress every time you open your browser.

With Win the Day, you can set daily targets that you wish to accomplish each day, and then you can gradually move towards your end goal.

I use Win the Day to set my goals but also stay focused during the day. With its Focus Mode feature, I can temporarily block distracting websites and leave a note for myself as a reminder of my priorities.

What I also find useful when it comes to Win the Day’s Focus Mode is that it shows how many minutes I have left before my focus session expires.

For example, when I was working on an article, I decided that I wanted to stay fully focused for 35 minutes. I set a reminder for that focus period, chose a duration of 35 minutes, and started the timer.

Win the Day focus mode
In Win the Day, you can set a focus period to complete a specific task

This feature helped me achieve my mini-goal of adding two more sections to my article in 35 minutes. As I watched the time pass by, I had the urge to hurry up and complete the task in time.

💡 Clockify Pro Tip

Are you looking for a way to track the time you spend on various activities throughout the day? Clockify’s habit tracker allows you to analyze your daily routines and habits and improve your time management skills, all for free:

Win the Day’s pros

  • Win the Day follows you whenever you open a new tab, so you’re always reminded of the task you should be focusing on, and
  • It offers the habit tracking feature to help you incorporate some new helpful habits into your everyday routine.

Win the Day’s cons

  • It doesn’t have a lot of features compared to other tools on the list, and
  • It rarely releases product updates.

What’s new in Win the Day?

The only relevant information that I could find regarding Win the Day’s latest 2017.10.18 version is that it was last updated on January 30th, 2018. I found this information on the Chrome web store’s website.

ClickUp — best for taking notes and managing to-do lists

Clickup

ClickUp is one of the best Chrome extensions for productivity. It allows you to take notes and record your ideas instantly but also manage your daily tasks with the help of to-do lists.

Why is ClickUp best for taking notes and managing to-do lists?

With its numerous note-taking capabilities, ClickUp lets you quickly capture your ideas, organize them, and more.

With ClickUp’s Chrome Extension, you can:

  • Take notes via the Notepad feature, and
  • Manage your to-do lists and access them from anywhere.

For example, I use ClickUp’s Notepad feature to write down everything that I don’t want to forget. With it, I can also:

  • Customize my notes by using headers, bold font, bullets, and more,
  • Add links to my notes, and
  • Sort notes by dragging them up and down for better organization.
You can easily create and customize notes in ClickUp
You can easily create and customize notes in ClickUp

One of my favorite things about ClickUp is that it allows me to convert my notes and make to-do lists out of them — simply click on the plus sign in the lower right corner of the Notepad window.

There, in the platform, I can see all my to-do lists, prioritize them by adding list priority, add due dates for each list, cross tasks off a list, and more. I like that, when I cross something off my to-do list, it gives me a sense of accomplishment but also allows me to clearly see which task I need to do next.

ClickUp’s pros

  • It offers AI functionalities that facilitate certain processes, such as summarizing tasks and Docs, and
  • It provides the option to export your to-do list and download it as a CSV/Excel file.

ClickUp’s cons

  • To be able to use some advanced AI options, you’ll need to upgrade to one of the paid plans, and
  • As it has a lot of options, it may take a while for new users to explore and learn how to use each of them.

What’s new in ClickUp?

In December 2023, ClickUp released several new features.

One of these features is the Task Types feature. Aside from being able to use ClickUp’s default task types such as “Task” and “Milestone,” you can now create custom task types (for example, you can create “Meeting” as your task type) to sort and categorize all your tasks appropriately.

Bitwarden — best for managing passwords

Bitwarden example

Bitwarden is a password manager that offers great security solutions for both individuals and businesses.

Why is Bitwarden best for managing passwords?

Most of us save all our passwords on our Google accounts. But what happens when you forget the password to access your Google account?

That’s where Bitwarden’s password manager steps in.

In addition to keeping track of all your passwords across devices and the web, you can use Bitwarden’s organization vault to:

  • Save sensitive data, and
  • Share passwords directly with another person within the company.

Bitwarden uses strong encryption to protect my data — which I find reassuring. It also provides me with data breach reports so I can see whether my personal information has been exposed.

Additionally, with its vault health reports, you can also reveal reused passwords.

With Bitwarden, I can generate strong passwords and get suggestions on how to improve existing ones. To generate a password, I have to choose:

  • The type of password (password or passphrase),
  • The length of the password, and
  • What kind of characters I want to include in it.
Bitwarden generator
You can easily generate passwords in Bitwarden

What I especially appreciate about Bitwarden is that its paid plan is quite affordable (less than $1 per month per user) which is practical for individuals who don’t really want to spend a lot of money on apps.

Bitwarden’s pros

  • It offers the Auto-fill option to auto-fill your credentials and save time, and
  • It provides you with the possibility of using PIN or biometrics unlock.

Bitwarden’s cons

  • To be able to use additional options like security reports or unlimited sharing, you’ll have to upgrade to some of the paid plans, and
  • It doesn’t provide phone support.

What’s new in Bitwarden?

In January 2024, Bitwarden released its latest 2024.1.0 version with some new updates. One of these updates includes the ability to log in to up to 5 Bitwarden accounts simultaneously and switch between them seamlessly while using Bitwarden’s Chrome extension.

Toby — best for organizing your tabs

Toby example

Toby is an open tab manager used by over 500,000 users. It lets you manage your tabs efficiently and work in a more organized way.

Why is Toby best for organizing your tabs?

With Toby’s Chrome extension, you can organize your open tabs and clear up your browser tab clutter. This is especially helpful if you usually keep a bunch of tabs open while working.

With Toby, you can also:

  • Create Collections and group your tabs as you see fit,
  • Use tags to organize your Collections, and
  • Add notes to your Collections.

To create a collection, I just need to click on “Add Collection,” name my collection, and drag and drop specific tabs into it. If I want to, I can also edit the title and description of each tab in said collection.

Toby tab editing
You can edit your tabs in Toby

One of my favorite things about Toby is that it allows me to save a certain tab session as a collection in one click and access it whenever I want. This is extremely useful if I’m doing research or working on a project, as I have quick access to all the important resources.

Finally, you can also use Toby’s Search option to find a particular website in a matter of seconds.

💡 Clockify Pro Tip

To see how you can keep your online spaces tidy and organized and why that is important for your productivity, read the following blog post:

Toby’s pros

  • It saves you time by enabling you to save and reopen multiple tabs at once, and
  • It allows you to add team members to your workspace and collaborate with them by giving them access to your collections.

Toby’s cons

  • Until you figure out how to use each tab management option, it may happen to you that you accidentally close a particular tab, and
  • The priority support is only available in the paid plan.

What’s new in Toby?

On January 9th, 2024, Toby announced its latest Next feature. With it, you can now add your tasks (tabs or collections) to Next and make a to-do list out of them, rearrange tasks according to priority, and check them off once you complete them.

Speechify — best for cutting down your reading time

Speechify example

Speechify is a text-to-speech tool that allows you to turn any text into speech using AI and cut your reading time in half.

Why is Speechify best for cutting down your reading time?

Speechify is the perfect productivity plugin for you if you want to listen to anything you usually read — from articles and emails to docs and PDFs.

With Speechify’s Chrome extension, you can:

  • Listen to any text on the web,
  • Import files and documents directly into your Speechify library and listen to them from there (for instance, you can upload a PDF file located locally on your computer or import any documents from your Google Drive or Dropbox), and
  • Change the voice of the speaker by choosing one of the 200+ voices available (including male and female voices and different accents).

What’s more, Speechify has a floating widget with all the essential options, such as the play/pause button, the option to increase the reading speed, and more. It follows you as you scroll down the page.

One of the reasons why I like using Speechify is because it helps me consume written content faster. For example, if I want to quickly go through a rather long article, I just need to press the “Play” button on the widget and increase the reading speed according to my needs. I can increase the speed up to 4.5x.

Speechify increasing the speed
You can increase the reading speed in Speechify

Furthermore, if you want to read a particular piece of text from a web page, you can use Speechify’s Screenshot option and drag your mouse across a specific area you want to listen to.

Speechify’s pros

  • It supports 30+ languages, and
  • It offers the option of using celebrity voices such as Gwyneth Paltrow or Snoop Dogg.

Speechify’s cons

  • Sometimes, it can take a while before it accepts certain changes (for example, when you want to change a reading voice), and
  • Its paid plans are a bit expensive.

What’s new in Speechify?

The only relevant information I could find regarding Speechify’s latest improvements was the information I found on the App Store’s website. According to it, Speechify’s latest improvements came on February 14th, 2024, with Speechify’s 2.29.4 version.

Some of these improvements include several crash fixes and certain UI/UX improvements.
