Goals are what sets thriving people apart from everyone else.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Norman Vincent Peale, an advocate of the positive thinking movement, once said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e5f6fe\"><em>\u201cAll successful people have a goal. Each characteristic is represented by 1 letter in the SMART abbreviation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>S stands for <\/strong><strong><em>Specific<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 specific goals are straightforward, precise, and can be easily defined.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>M stands for <\/strong><strong><em>Measurable<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>\u2014 measurable goals constitute points of reference you can use to assess whether you are successful in progressing toward or reaching the said goal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A stands for <\/strong><strong><em>Attainable<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 attainable goals are realistic in the sense that you have a reasonable amount of time, money, and skills to reach them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>R stands for <\/strong><strong><em>Relevant<\/em><\/strong> \u2014 relevant goals hold particular importance in your life, the project you\u2019re currently working on, or your business as a whole.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>T stands for <\/strong><strong><em>Time-bound<\/em><\/strong><strong> <\/strong>\u2014 time-bound goals \u201cbind\u201d you with a specific time frame you\u2019ll have to work on to call your efforts a success.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, SMART goal setting helps you elaborate your aims and desires \u2014 and make an action plan. In any case, you can use these criteria to decide whether your current <a href=\"https:\/\/clockify.me\/blog\/business\/career-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">career goals<\/a> are worth pursuing or if working on particular areas of your personal development would be beneficial enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help you wrap your head around the matter, here are 5 critical steps to follow on your SMART goals journey. Let\u2019s get started!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"step-1-make-goals-specific\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step #1: Make goals specific&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Specific goals are well-defined and precise enough so that you won\u2019t steer away from achieving them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at an example.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you say that you want to be in marketing, that\u2019s a <em>nonspecific<\/em> goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s what you usually say to your extended family when you want them to stop bugging you about when you\u2019ll get a job. Again, it sounds nice, and it may even impress your grandparents \u2014 but it\u2019s too broad to motivate you to <em>act<\/em> on it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, suppose you say you want to land the position of a Junior Marketing Specialist in a Boston tech company. At this rate, I\u2019ll land a job faster.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A3:<\/strong> I want to feel financially stable, enjoy my work more, and generally feel better about myself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A4:<\/strong> I\u2019m the chief person responsible for getting the job. Still, I\u2019ll also talk to a few mentors and industry peers to learn how to land a good position.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A5:<\/strong> I\u2019ll spend a bit more time online, researching and applying for jobs. I\u2019ll look at job boards and create my own portfolio website.  <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A6:<\/strong> I\u2019ll have advice from my mentors and the network I\u2019ve established over the years. Also, I\u2019ll ask previous employers to write me recommendation letters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"step-2-make-goals-measurable\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step #2: Make goals measurable<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Measurable goals consist of specific milestones with clearly defined criteria that help you track your progress on your way to achieving them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you just say that you\u2019ll study for your Monday math exam, you might not actually be able to follow through with this plan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you define your goal without a specific, actionable plan, you don\u2019t have any distinguishable milestones to help you stay on track.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But let\u2019s assume you say that you\u2019re going to study for your math exam for 5 hours each day, leading up to the next-to-last day before the exam, when you\u2019ll revise everything. You stick to your diet without faltering and exercise hard every morning. But, ultimately, you fail because losing that much in such a short time is near impossible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You feel discouraged by such an unfeasible goal from the start. As a result, I firmly believe I can do it again.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A3:<\/strong> I\u2019ll have access to a personal trainer, helpful advice from my nutritionist friend, and additional support from my family.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A4:<\/strong> I have all the necessary resources at hand, as my city has several great gyms. I also have an enviable selection of healthy food in the neighborhood supermarket.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A5:<\/strong> Considering that I work remotely 5 days a week and my job comes with flexible working hours, I can spare 1 hour per weekday to go to the gym \u2014 and I have enough time to prepare healthy meals. A college education goal may also be <em>relevant<\/em> if you pick a potentially profitable subject you\u2019re not 100% passionate about, but you want to pursue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, let\u2019s explore 3 questions and 3 answers of relevant goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 id=\"questions-for-relevant-goals\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Questions for relevant goals<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>To make your goal relevant, ask yourself the following questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Q1:<\/strong> Why is this goal important to me?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Q2: <\/strong>Is this goal worth my time?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Q3:<\/strong> Is this the right time for it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples of answers that prove the goal is <\/strong><strong><em>relevant<\/em><\/strong><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A1:<\/strong> If I get a major in economics, I\u2019ll be more financially secure and have more time to spend on what matters. Also, pursuing a major in economics will make me more confident about myself and my current career.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A2: <\/strong>I feel that getting a major in economics would benefit me in the short and long run. In a nutshell, doing so will affect my mental and physical health. Therefore, it\u2019s worth my time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A3:<\/strong> The holiday feasts are over, and it\u2019s time to implement the New Year\u2019s resolutions. As a result, it\u2019s time to pursue that major in economics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"step-5-make-goals-time-bound\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step #5: Make goals time-bound&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Time-bound goals are usually set within a specific time frame, with a clear deadline for their completion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a look at the following example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To say that you want to participate in a poem writing contest that\u2019s due next week is admirable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But phrasing it like that means it\u2019s <em>not a time-bound goal<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, the <em>contest<\/em> has a deadline \u2014 say it\u2019s Sunday, February 2. But you didn\u2019t define a deadline for your work. Will you submit your finished work on Tuesday? Or Wednesday? Or 5 hours before the contest deadline, giving you enough time to tweak it to perfection?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a matter of fact, what\u2019s your time-bound battle plan?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, say that you plan to handle the contest by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Writing the first draft of your poem on Monday, January 27,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Revising everything on Tuesday, January 28,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finalizing the rhyme scheme on Wednesday, January 29, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sending out the poem on Thursday, January 30 \u2014 4 days before the deadline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s <em>a time-bound goal<\/em> you can work with. Also, I\u2019ll include daily targets for each of the 3 stages \u2014 writing, revising, and finalizing the poem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A2:<\/strong> Every day after work, I\u2019ll set aside 2 hours to work on the poem. I\u2019ll make a clear schedule for writing, revising, and finalizing the poem in stages. I\u2019ll check in with my progress every day to see if I\u2019m set to meet the deadline of submitting the poem 4 days ahead of schedule.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A3: <\/strong>The first outcome I can expect should be completing each stage \u2014 writing, revising, finalizing \u2014 on a daily basis. For example, if I\u2019ve completed the writing stage, then I can consider my first outcome a success.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you know how to set specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound goals.
