Overlapping time entries occur when two or more time logs cover the same exact timeframe. By default, Clockify allows overlapping entries because many users need flexibility when tracking multitasking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, if you need to keep your timeline perfectly clean, here is how to identify, fix, and prevent overlaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to find and fix existing overlaps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you or your team have already created overlapping time entries, you can easily clean them up:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Method 1: Use the Calendar view<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Go to the Calendar<\/strong> page<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Look for blocks of time that are layered next to each other<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Click and drag the top or bottom edges of a time block to visually adjust the start and end times so they no longer overlap<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Method 2: Use the Detailed Report (For Workspace Admins)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Go to Reports<\/strong> page<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Select Detailed<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. Filter by the specific user or date where you suspect overlaps<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Review the Start and End times<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. Click directly on the start\/end times of the overlapping entry to edit it manually <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      How to prevent overlapping entries<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      If you want to allow manual time entries but reduce overlaps, inform your team to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n
      • Check the Calendar before logging manually:<\/strong> Instruct users to look at their Calendar view before adding a manual duration to ensure the slot is empty.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Stop timers before starting new ones:<\/strong> If a user uses the timer, make sure they click “Stop” before clicking “Start” on a completely new task.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      • Use the “Compact Mode” carefully:<\/strong> If a user stops a timer and immediately starts another in compact mode, they might occasionally trigger a one-minute overlap.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n

        Enable Force Timer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        Note<\/strong>: Force Timer is a paid feature available on the Pro and Enterprise plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        If you want the system to completely block overlaps from happening in the first place, you can enforce real-time tracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The Force Timer<\/strong> feature disables manual time entry entirely. Because users can only track time via a live timer, the system automatically prevents any overlapping entries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        This is a workspace-wide setting and will apply to all users<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

        Why do overlapping time entries happen?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

        Usually, overlaps are accidental. The most common scenarios include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        • Mixing timers and manual entries:<\/strong> A user is running a live timer from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, but forgets and manually logs 2 hours of work from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
          <\/li>\n\n\n\n
        • Typing durations instead of exact times:<\/strong> A user types “2h” into the manual duration box without checking the start time, accidentally laying that 2 hours over an existing entry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n
