Updates to Decimal duration format (Beta)

Clockify is updating how the Decimal duration format handles calculations across the app to achieve higher precision across all reporting and revenue totals. 

This is currently available in a Beta rollout for select users that have Decimal duration format configured in their workspace settings. Once validated, this updated calculation logic will be rolled out to all workspaces using Decimal format.

What is changing #

Previously, Decimal mode automatically rounded the duration of individual time entries before calculating duration and amount formulas. Pre-rounding entries created small calculation discrepancies across Summary, Detailed, Weekly, und Attendance reports, as well as the Dashboard, Timesheets, und Erinnerung.

With the new calculation logic, Clockify keeps the full duration of every time entry in calculations, without rounding. The app would only round to two decimal places at the very end when totals need to be displayed on your screen.

Example: Tracking 20 Minutes (New Logic)

• Exact Tracked Time: 20 minutes (0.3333… hours)
• Displayed Total: 0.33 hours
• How it calculates: Because 20 minutes equals 0.3333… hours, standard decimal rounding (since the 3rd decimal place is less than 5) sets your displayed value to 0.33 hours while keeping your full 20-minute tracked duration intact and using its full unrounded duration in formulas.

Here are some examples of the updated calculation logic.

Before and After: Time Tracking

• Before: If a user logged three time entries of 20 minutes, each entry is rounded to 0.33 hours resulting in 0.99 hours total in the Timesheet.
• Future: Formulas now use full duration of each entry for the calculation (20 minutes = 0.3333… hours). When summed together, the three entries display 1.00 hour total in the Timesheet.

Before and After: Billable Amounts
A team member with an hourly rate of $100 logs three separate 20-minute time entries.

• Before: Each 20-minute entry was rounded to 0.33 hours before calculating the amount (0.33 x $100 = $33), resulting in a total of 0.99 hours and invoice total of $99.00.
• Future: Formulas now use the exact full duration of each entry for the calculation (20 minutes = 0.3333… hours). When added together, the three entries total 1.00 hour and invoice total is $100.00.

How this affects historical data #

Because formulas now use full durations rather than pre-rounded decimals, applying this logic to existing time entries will slightly adjust how past totals are displayed.

If you re-run Time Reports (such as Summary, Detailed, or Weekly) or an Attendance Report for a past period (e.g. January 2026), you might notice a variance of around 0.01 per entry compared to historical reports.

Why we are making this change #

Inconsistent rounding rules between different pages and duration formats cause confusion and make cross-checking numbers difficult. Using full durations align calculation rules and give you more accurate, reliable numbers on every page.

The new calculation logic is applied automatically, and the legacy option is turned off.

If you find discrepancies with past data and need reports to match with past billing or tax periods, you can switch back to the previous calculation logic in the workspace settings. 

To restore previous calculation logic:

3. Wähle Round duration to 2 decimal places aktivieren

When enabled, durations are rounded to two decimal places before calculating formulas (e.g., 0.33 instead of 0.333333). This restores the previous calculation behavior across all reports and pages, preserving your past numbers.
