Duration format
2 min read
Efficient time tracking is at Clockify’s core, and we understand that different users prefer different ways of representing duration. With preferred duration format, you can see, enter, and export time in format that suits your needs.
Clockify has three different duration formats:
| Duration type | Format | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Full | hh:mm:ss | 2 is 2 minutes (00:02:00) |
| Compact | h:mm | 2 is 2 minutes (0:02) |
| Decimal | h.hh | 2 is 2 hours (2.00) |
Note
Decimal format is a paid feature you can enable by upgrading your workspace to any of our paid plans.
Set up duration format #
To set up duration format on your workspace:
- Click on the three-dot icon next to your workspace name
- Select Workspace settings
- Find duration format in the General tab
- Choose one from the dropdown

Duration types and calculations #
Once you selected duration format, calculations and displays are applied consistently to ensure accuracy across reports and timesheets.
- Full Mode: Time calculations use the exact, full duration of tracked time across all modules. Your time will be displayed in full formatting across the entire app, except on Invoices and Projects, which will remain in decimal format. The Attendance Report also calculates totals using full durations instead of decimal rounded values.
- Compact Mode: Time calculations use compact rounded durations across all modules. Compact formatted time is displayed everywhere in the app, except on Invoices and Projects, where it stays in decimal format.
- Decimal Mode: Background calculations use the full duration of each time entry instead of decimal rounding logic. Numbers are rounded to two decimal places.
Durations in reports #
Here’s how duration formats will appear in reports and other places in Clockify depending on your settings.
- Assignment report: All monetary values in the Assignment report are displayed with two-decimal precision for standard financial reporting, regardless of your chosen duration mode. The time information will follow your selected duration mode.
- Consistent exports: When you download Detailed, Summary, or Weekly reports to Excel, those files will match the time and amount numbers you see if you’re using Compact and Full modes.
- Reminders: The time displayed in Reminder emails will match what you see in the reports and timesheets for that user.
